NS PassWord is a security utility which prompts either a password or a special Floppy Disk after Startup.
NS PassWord is Shareware. If you want to use it without restrictions please pay the 10$ Shareware fee.
System Requirements
NS PassWord should work on any Color Macintosh with at least 512 Kb free RAM and System 7.0 or later.
Quick installation
1. Copy NS PassWord into a folder on your Hard Disk.
2. Make an alias of NS PassWord and put it into the Startup Items folder in your System
Folder.
3. Put the file "MacinTalk" (should be included in the NS PassWord package) into your System
Folder.
3. Launch NS PassWord.
4. Change your personal password by clicking on Change Password (See "How to change the
password")
5. If you want to alter preferences click on Preferences (See "The Preferences")
6. Now you may exit NS PassWord by clicking on Exit.
How to change the password
The first time you launch NS PassWord, no password is defined. You may access freely the functions of NS PassWord until you define a password.
To define a password, simply click on Change Password. Now you may enter your personal password. Click on OK to save. You may change your password as often as you like.
If you defined a password you must always enter it at the startup of NS PassWord.
The Preferences
If you want to alter the preferences of NS PassWord, simply click on Preferences. A new window with some checkboxes should appear.
Disk modus:
If Disk modus is checked, NS PassWord doesn't ask you a password at Startup but a special Floppy Disk. DANGER! Before using the Disk modus, you have to create a NS PassWord Floppy Disk by clicking on Create a security disk. (See "The Disk modus")
Hide desktop:
If Hide desktop is checked, a grid will cover the screen making everything illegible until you quit NS PassWord.
Speech:
If Speech is checked, the computer will read aloud all the messages NS PassWord writes on the screen. For Speech, the file "MacinTalk" must be in your System Folder.
Break alarm:
A silly joke. Check it and try to enter a wrong password. Beam me up, Scotty!
Splash screen:
If it's checked a splash screen with some piece of information will appear at every startup of NS PassWord.
You may save the preferences by clicking on OK.
The Disk modus
The Disk modus is the main reason why I programmed NS PassWord. If you create a security disk, NS PassWord creates a password file on a Floppy Disk which contains a password of 389120 characters.
To create a security disk first insert an empty Floppy Disk into the Disk Drive and click on Preferences. Now click on Create a security disk and NS PassWord automatically creates the password files on the Floppy Disk and on the Hard Disk.
Now you may check Disk modus and save the preferences. At next Startup, NS PassWord won't ask you your password but your security disk. Without this disk you won't be able to access your computer.
Note: Also a copy of your Disk will give access to your computer. So be careful!
Further informations
NS PassWord has also a built-in screensaver. It is automatically activated after 5 minutes without keybord or mouse activity.
Like most of the password utilities, NS PassWord may be disabled when holding the Shift key during the startup of your Macintosh. To avoid this, you should use the Freeware "Shift Switcher" (should be included in the NS PassWord package), which disables the Shift key during the Startup of the computer.
The user interface looks very cool if Aaron is installed. Try it!
Until you become a registered user, you will get a message at Startup and sometimes NS PassWord will punish you by exiting without asking a password/Floppy disk.
